Skin colour can affect the ageing process
Darker skinned people typically have less wrinkles than lighter skinned people. People who have darker skin have more pigment in their skin. This doesn’t mean that they won’t age. Eventually, we all age. It may just take them a little longer to do so. Of course poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drugs, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and too much sun exposure can change things for anyone’s skin.
Does Darker Skin Wrinkle Less Than Lighter Skin?
As you get older, you either photo-age or you chronologically age. Photo-ageing is when you age prematurely. Chronological ageing refers to the natural ageing process. Photo-ageing is dependent on the choices you make, how well you take care of your body and genetics. Your skin colour is dependent on the amount of pigment your body produces.
When our skin becomes damaged from UV ray exposure, our body kicks in its natural defense, which is to produce more melanin. Melanin is what actually makes your skin darken. This is a protective mechanism to try to prevent further damage. And yes, every time you’re in the sun and you get a “sun tan”, this is actually a sign that your skin has become damaged and your body is trying to fight it. The darker the skin you have, the larger the pockets of melanosomes in your skin cells. These contain a sticky pigment called melanin.
People with very pale skin (fair skinned) produce very little to no melanin. Asian skins produce a yellowish type of pigment due to the large amounts of beta-carotene in their skins, which is also why they age so well as it is an anti-oxidants we need to obtain either through foods such as carrots or supplementation. There are two main types of melanin. Pheomelanin is found mainly in Caucasian-type skins, especially red-heads and African American skins produce a dark, thick melanin called eumelanin.
Not only do the size of the pockets in the skin cells differ, but so does the density of melanin within them. The melanin is packed very tightly in black skin; so much so that it absorbs and scatters more light, providing more protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Protect your skin, no matter how dark or light your complexion. Using a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen that is water-resistant daily and feeding your skin internally and topically is the way to go to age gracefully.

In my practice, stress is one of the most formidable opponents. Stress’ heightened sense of urgency can actually be addictive for some people. Physiologically, it works like this. Once stress is triggered, your adrenal gland produces and dumps cortisol into your bloodstream. The more you are stressed the more your body can’t regulate the levels of cortisol in your system, and that’s when the danger begins. Your body can start showing signs of stressed skin and increased sensitivity, itchiness, breakouts, and even stretchmarks! Continue reading
Have you ever thought about what exactly is happening to your skin on a daily basis, and what is causing harm? Today, ageing is showing up faster than ever, and a huge part of the problem is everything you are exposed to during the day, and when you are out and about at night!
The Effects of Pollution on Skin:
There are many different types of pollution, namely: Air pollution, ultraviolet radiation, cigarette smoke, extreme temperatures, carbon monoxide from traffic and artificial light. Scientists have proven that continuous exposure to these culprits leads to faster ageing and your skin also becomes more vulnerable to diseases such as cancer.
Your skin is your main protective barrier to whatever is out there, looking to cause harm. Doctors also use your skin as a diagnostic tool to determine good health as your skin shows what is happening on the outside, but also on the inside. This includes physical and emotional manifestations of diseases and disorders in the making. For example, a grey skin tone can indicate a low oxygen level, yellow skin a liver or kidney related problem and so forth.
How to protect your skin from harmful pollutants:
Load up on anti-oxidants – These lovelies neutralize oxidative stress and offer protection against these poisons. Choose Vit A,C and E and get advice from your health specialist on what the correct dosage would be for your age, weight and dietary needs.
Take a good quality Omega 3 supplement – Omega 3 is probably your most essential nutrient, which you can only obtain by supplementing or eating oily fish in quite large quantities. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and protective measure for cells and their nucleic acids. If your skin is feeling dry, you are most like deficient in this very important nutrient.
Use a Broad-Spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen, everyday, even when it’s overcast – Even fluorescent lighting can affect the DNA of cells, so don’t be shy when applying your sunscreen. Also remember that a sunscreen is time-dependant, so you will need to reapply every 3-4 hours, depending on what factor you are using. This being said, try not to use a product that contains a SPF level of 35 or more. The chemical content is very high in these, which causes and inflammatory response and even skin allergies or contact dermatitis.
Work on your circulation – all the time!
When your circulation is working well, your body can deal with all sorts of invasions and attacks. Your blood carries vital oxygen and nutrients to your cells, and if your circulation isn’t working well, the oxygen and nutrients won’t get to the very superficial skin cells. This is detrimental because these are the cells being exposed first.
